The Reggio Emilia approach to child-centered learning is revolutionizing child care programs across the United States. The Child Development Associate (CDA) training program, based on the Reggio Emilia approach, produces 18,000 credentialed child development associates each year.

1994 UWU graduate Roberta “Bobbi” Cobb is the only CDA classroom instructor in eastern Washington. She takes on 25 students per cycle and guides them through a 48 week course, reinforcing CDA sanctioned classroom training with an additional program of extensive, immersive mentoring that online and scholastic versions of the program do not offer.

Loris Malaguzzi’s Reggio Emilia approach to child development, originated in its namesake town in northern Italy in 1968, leans heavily on the published theories of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky.
